Sohail Husain | Beyond Beliefs
Sat 26 Apr 2025 | 9:00am - 10:00am
Local author, Sohail Husain, discusses his acclaimed memoir, Beyond Beliefs, which tells the remarkable life stories of his parents and grandparents and his equally fascinating journey to discover them.
It is a compelling tale of lives engulfed by the defining events of the 20th Century – WW1, the Great Depression, the Partition of India, and the Holocaust. With a German Jewish mother and an Indian Muslim father, Sohail knew he had an unusual heritage, but only after they died did he realise how extraordinary it was. Separated by birthplace, race, faith, language, and age, their common experience of unimaginable upheaval and loss brought them together. Their marriage was complicated and unconventional, but their love for each other was enduring.
This is a deeply personal tale spanning continents and cultures. It exposes the horrific consequences of violent extremism and struggles faced by refugees and immigrants, but is testament to how the human spirit can overcome adversity.
Occasionally upsetting, frequently emotive, and sometimes amusing, this thought-provoking talk has much relevance to the world we live in today.
Talk length: 1 hour including Q&A, followed by a book signing.
