The Big Book Club | Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon
Sun 27 Apr 2025 | 4:30pm - 5:30pm
Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon has been selected by Claire Fuller as the book to be read for this year’s Winchester Books Festival Big Book Club.
It is a bold and funny first novel, set in ancient Sicily, and tells the story of two unemployed potters who decide to put on a classic play with some starving prisoners of war.
It was Waterstones Debut Novel of the Year in 2024 and is a Sunday Times Bestseller, as well as being chosen as book of the year by the Guardian, Independent, and many other publications. It has been described as an exhilarating, fiercely original story of brotherhood, war and art – and of daring to dream of something bigger than ourselves.
‘One of the most original and brilliant debuts in years’ — Irish Times
‘Bold and totally unexpected…I was hooked from the first page’ — Douglas Stuart, author of Shuggie Bain
Following on from the success of our Big Book Club at last year’s Festival, we are encouraging all local book groups, and anyone else who would like to join us, to read Glorious Exploits and come together for this special event, the last event of the Festival, at which Claire Fuller will lead a discussion about the book with the author Ferdia Lennon present and participating.
